What Ancient Yogis May Have Discovered Long Before Neuroscience
Imagine traveling back three thousand years.
No microscopes.
No brain scans.
No MRI machines.
No heart rate variability monitors.
No one had heard the words autonomic nervous system or vagus nerve.
Yet every morning, people gathered.
They sat quietly.
They slowed their breathing.
And together, they made one long, resonant sound.
OM.
Why?
For many, it was a sacred practice.
A way to cultivate presence, connection, and awareness.
But I can't help wondering something else.
What if they also noticed that people simply felt different afterward?
Not because they understood the biology.
But because they understood the experience.
Maybe they didn't know why it worked.
Maybe they just knew that it did.
One of the things I love most about science is that it doesn't always replace ancient wisdom.
Sometimes it explains it.
Over the last few decades, researchers have begun studying practices that have existed for centuries—slow breathing, meditation, singing, chanting, humming, prayer, yoga—and asking a fascinating question:
What is happening inside the body?
In many cases, the answers are surprisingly consistent.
These practices appear to influence the nervous system in measurable ways.
Take OM, for example.
When you chant OM, you're doing much more than making a sound.
You're taking a slow breath in.
Then you extend your exhale.
Aaaaaaa... Uuuuuuu... Mmmmmmmm...
Without thinking about it, you've just combined several things that modern neuroscience associates with nervous system regulation.
Your breathing slows.
Your exhale becomes longer.
Your attention narrows.
Your vocal cords vibrate.
Your chest vibrates.
Your throat vibrates.
Your jaw and facial muscles begin to soften.
Instead of simply thinking about relaxing, you're giving your nervous system physical information that things may be okay.
Your body is listening.
One of the greatest misconceptions about stress is that it lives only in our thoughts.
It doesn't.
Your nervous system is constantly collecting information from everywhere.
Your breathing.
Your posture.
Your muscles.
Your heartbeat.
Your environment.
Your relationships.
Your voice.
Every second of every day, your brain is asking one essential question:
Am I safe?
It doesn't answer that question through logic alone.
It answers it through sensation.
That's why practices involving breath, movement, sound, and touch can sometimes influence how we feel before we've even changed a single thought.
Researchers are now finding measurable physiological changes during practices like OM chanting.
Studies have shown increases in markers associated with parasympathetic activity—the branch of the nervous system involved in rest, recovery, and restoration. Other research has found reduced activity in brain regions involved in emotional threat processing while participants chanted OM compared with making a neutral sound.
Scientists are still working to understand exactly why these changes occur.
Some researchers believe the vibration created during chanting may stimulate sensory pathways connected with the vagus nerve and other cranial nerves. Others point to the effects of slow breathing, prolonged exhalation, focused attention, or the combination of all three.
The important point isn't that we've solved the mystery.
It's that we're finally beginning to study it.
Then I started noticing something else.
Humans hum.
A lot.
Parents hum to babies.
People hum while cooking.
Someone hums while gardening.
You hum in the shower.
You hum while rocking in a chair.
Most of us don't hum when we're panicking.
We hum when we're settling.
Could humming be one of the oldest forms of nervous system regulation?
I don't know.
But it's an interesting question.
And OM may simply be one beautifully structured version of something humans have been doing naturally for thousands of years.
The more I study the nervous system, the more I notice a pattern.
Across cultures that never met each other...
People developed practices involving slow breathing.
Long vocal sounds.
Rhythm.
Repetition.
Stillness.
Movement.
Connection.
Different beliefs.
Different traditions.
Remarkably similar biology.
Perhaps humanity kept discovering the same nervous system through different languages.
This is what fascinates me most.
Ancient yogis weren't talking about heart rate variability.
They weren't measuring vagal tone.
They didn't know the names of cranial nerves or understand functional MRI scans.
They weren't trying to explain the anatomy.
They were paying attention to the human experience.
They observed that people breathed differently.
People became quieter.
People felt calmer.
People felt more connected.
Thousands of years later...
Neuroscience is beginning to ask why.
Maybe they didn't know the anatomy.
Maybe they knew the experience.
And maybe...
they were onto something.
Try It Yourself
You don't need to adopt anyone else's beliefs to become curious about your own biology.
Take one slow breath in.
Then exhale with a long, gentle:
Aaaaaaa... Uuuuuuu... Mmmmmmmm...
Repeat it five or six times.
Don't ask whether you "did it right."
Instead, ask a different question.
What is my nervous system telling me now that it wasn't telling me five minutes ago?
Sometimes the oldest practices still have something to teach us.
Sometimes science helps us understand why.
