The Molecule Your Gut Makes That Talks to Your Nervous System

If you came out of mold exposure with a gut that stopped cooperating and a nervous system that won't stand down, there's a single molecule sitting at the intersection of both. It's called butyrate. Once you understand what it does, a lot of what feels like two separate problems turns out to be one.
What butyrate actually is
Butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid. Your body doesn't make it directly. Your gut bacteria do, when they ferment certain fibers you eat.
It's the primary fuel source for the cells lining your colon. Not a supporting player. The actual fuel. When butyrate is scarce, those cells are running on empty, and the lining they're supposed to maintain starts to fail.
That failure has a name you already know. The barrier gets leaky. The tight junctions between cells loosen. Things that should stay in the gut start crossing into circulation, and the immune system responds the way it responds to anything that shouldn't be there. With inflammation.
Why this matters after mold
Mold exposure does two things at once that are relevant here.
It disrupts the gut microbiome, which cuts your butyrate-producing bacteria and drops your butyrate supply. And it drives systemic inflammation that keeps the whole system on alert.
So you arrive at recovery with a barrier that's under-fueled and an immune system that's over-activated. Low butyrate sits upstream of both.
Here's the part most people miss. A leaky gut barrier isn't just a digestive issue. Every inflammatory signal crossing that barrier is an input to a nervous system that's already reading the environment as dangerous.
The gut lining and the alarm state aren't two problems. They're the same loop.
The nervous system connection
Butyrate signals along the gut-brain axis, and it does it partly through the vagus nerve. That's the same nerve that carries your parasympathetic, back-to-safety signaling. Researchers are actively studying how short-chain fatty acids influence mood, cognition, and the way the body regulates its stress response. Butyrate also supports regulatory immune cells, the ones whose job is to calm an immune response rather than escalate it.
Put plainly: enough butyrate helps the barrier hold. That lowers the inflammatory load reaching your nervous system. And that makes it easier for a system stuck in alarm to find the threshold where it can settle.
It's not a sedative. It's a mechanism that removes one of the inputs keeping the alarm lit.
How you actually raise it
Butyrate comes from fermentable fiber, so the food lever is real. Resistant starch is the strongest source. Think cooked-and-cooled potatoes and rice, green bananas, legumes. Oats, onions, and garlic feed the bacteria that produce it. This is the slow, foundational route.
There's also direct supplementation. Sodium or calcium-magnesium butyrate, often delivered as tributyrin so it survives the stomach and reaches the colon. Supplemental butyrate can help when the microbiome is depleted enough that food alone isn't moving the needle, which is common after significant mold exposure.
One caution worth naming. Fermentable fiber can be poorly tolerated when the gut is inflamed or the nervous system is reactive. More is not automatically better here. This is a place where sequencing matters. Stabilize before you push.
Where this fits in the bigger picture
Butyrate is one lever. It sits inside a larger mechanism involving your barrier integrity, your microbiome, your inflammatory load, and the alarm state those feed.
